Bacterial Incorporation of Organic Substances Released by Natural Phytoplankton Populations*

چکیده
A modified differential filtration was used to measure extracellular release of primary products by natural phytoplankton populations and subsequent incorporation of these products by bacteria. Water samples were incubated with I4C labelled bicarbonate for 6 h and 24 h , respectively. A time course experiment showed that 6 h are sufficient for attaining an approximate isotopic equilibrium between the fractions of inorganic carbon and released organic carbon. Results reveal a strong relationship between primary production and release of organic substances. The highest concentrations of exudates (239 pg C 1-') released by phytoplankton amounts to 27.6 % of the primary production. Percentage of released substances depends on the composition of the algal populations. Skeletonema costaturn released between 5.1 % and 12.5 % of the primary products; nanoflagellates, up to 40 %; Prorocentrurn rnicans, slightly over 20 %; Chaetoceros sp., about 25 %. Up to 90 % of available exudates were utilized by bacteria. Bacterial incorporation of exudates fluctuated during the year. The highest percentage of exudates was incorporated in the presence of dinoflagellates and nanoflagellates. Bacterial utilization of exudates is compared with that of glucose.

Biochemical composition of dissolved organic carbon derived from phytoplankton and used by heterotrophic bacteria.
The molecular size distribution and biochemical composition of the dissolved organic carbon released from natural communities of lake phytoplankton (photosynthetically produced dissolved organic carbon [PDOC]) and subsequently used by heterotrophic bacteria were determined in three lakes differing in trophic status and concentration of humic substances. After incubation of epilimnetic lake wate...
متن کاملNet production and consumption of fluorescent colored dissolved organic matter by natural bacterial assemblages growing on marine phytoplankton exudates.
An understanding of the distribution of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the oceans and its role in the global carbon cycle requires a better knowledge of the colored materials produced and consumed by marine phytoplankton and bacteria. In this work, we examined the net uptake and release of CDOM by a natural bacterial community growing on DOM derived from four phytoplankton species c...
متن کاملChemotaxis toward phytoplankton drives organic matter partitioning among marine bacteria.
The microenvironment surrounding individual phytoplankton cells is often rich in dissolved organic matter (DOM), which can attract bacteria by chemotaxis. These "phycospheres" may be prominent sources of resource heterogeneity in the ocean, affecting the growth of bacterial populations and the fate of DOM. However, these effects remain poorly quantified due to a lack of quantitative ecological ...

Seasonal and spatial distributions of extracellular enzymatic activities and microbial incorporations of dissolved organic substrates were followed in sediments of the brackish water Kiel Bight (Baltic Sea, Federal Republic of Germany). Enzymatic hydrolysis of polymeric organic compounds was determined by means of fluorogenic substrates (4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-d-glucoside, l-leucine-4-methyl...
متن کاملBacterial DMSP metabolism during the senescence of the spring diatom bloom in the Northwest Atlantic
The impact of the decline of the vernal bloom on the bacterial metabolism of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), the precursor of dimethylsulfide (DMS), was investigated during a 7 d Lagrangian study conducted in the Northwest Atlantic in spring 2003. Daily variations in bacterial leucine incorporation, dissolved DMSP (DMSPd) uptake and DMS production rates were measured in the surface mixed lay...
